2010 Conference June 17–20 Portland, Oregon
Theme: Many Shades of Green

Outstanding Graduate Student Conference Presentation

Note: The outstanding student presentation competition is now closed. Below is the process student applicants followed.

This honor will be awarded for the best presentation (in paper or Powerpoint format) at the 2010 annual conference by a currently enrolled graduate student (undergraduates are encouraged to attend and contribute, but only graduates may enter this competition). Student work will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
  1. Transdisciplinary approach: The work engages more than one traditional discipline, way of knowing, or form of art and as such it creatively moves its audience toward understandings that would not have been possible from the viewpoint of a single field.
  2. Relevant content: The work discovers reliable and fresh insight on the environment and the human relation with it.
  3. Production value: The work is crafted using appropriate media and with the highest standards of clarity and rigor.
Here is the student award selection process:
  1. Students interested in applying for the award should follow all 2010 AESS conference proposal submission guidelines.  Under "Topic Areas," one or more of the general sessions below should be selected:
    • Many Shades of Green: General Contributions
    • ESS Theory: General Contributions
    • ESS Pedagogy: General Contributions
    • ESS Praxis: General Contributions
  2. In addition, students should indicate their interest in the award by writing the following in the "Comments to Chair" box at the bottom of the proposal form: “AESS Outstanding Student Presentation Award Applicant.”
  3. Student award applicants should forward by email the following supporting materials to the Awards Committee Chair, Julianne Lutz Warren (jw156@nyu.edu), by Thu April 15:
    • an extended abstract of between 500-800 words, and (if needed) a maximum of three accompanying figures or tables or, for fields of media or performing arts, one 1-3 minute audio/video recording
    • a brief statement written by the student applicant describing her/his degree status and role in authorship of the submitted presentation
    • one letter discussing the quality and importance of the applicant’s work written by the applicant’s advisor
  4. The Awards Committee will select a group of finalists from the pool of applicants, based on the criteria outlined above. Finalists will be scheduled to present in a special “Student Award Finalists Session” at the conference on Friday, June 18. Finalists’ presentations will be attended and evaluated by the Awards Committee and/or its appointees. Students whose presentations are accepted for the conference but not ranked as finalists are still encouraged to present.
  5. The Awards Committee will select one presentation to receive the award, based on the criteria outlined above, and up to three may receive honorable mention.
  6. The winners will be announced at the Saturday plenary lunch on June 19.
